Truckers know one wrong move can change everything – and that reality has once again been proven true in Fort Pierce, Florida, where a semi-truck crash claimed three lives and left the driver facing serious charges.
According to authorities, 28-year-old Harjinder Singh from California was behind the wheel of a rig on the Florida Turnpike on Tuesday, 12 August, when he attempted an illegal U-turn at a turnaround bay clearly marked “official use only.” Such bays are reserved for emergency vehicles, but Singh allegedly ignored the restriction, cutting across traffic in front of a Chrysler minivan.
The minivan had no chance of avoiding the truck and slammed under the trailer. Two passengers died on the scene, while the driver later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. All three were South Florida residents. Singh and his passenger escaped unhurt.
Investigators later revealed that Singh had entered the US illegally in 2018 and somehow obtained a commercial driver’s licence in California. He has since been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and is being held in ICE custody.

Officials described the crash as both “shocking and criminal,” stressing that three families are now grieving because of a reckless decision.
This tragedy mirrors a case closer to home. In 2021, SA Trucker reported on a Zimbabwean trucker, Takudzwa Blessing Marimo, who was jailed in Namibia after making an illegal U-turn that led to a fatal crash on the C-34 highway. A bakkie collided with his rig, killing the driver instantly. Marimo was charged with culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving.
Whether in the US, Namibia, or South Africa, the lesson is the same. Risky manoeuvres and shortcuts don’t just cost fines or points – they cost lives. And when lives are lost, prison time usually follows.
It’s a harsh reminder to every driver hauling big loads: that steering wheel carries the weight of more than just freight, it carries the responsibility of every life on the road around you.
