One person has sadly lost their life in a head-on collision involving a side tipper and a rigid truck on the R23 between Heidelberg and Balfour on Friday morning.
According to a witness, the horrific crash happened at around 10:10. The impact caused one of the trucks to burst into flames instantly.
Emergency services responded swiftly and are currently on scene. Recovery operations are underway, but authorities have confirmed that the road is completely closed to traffic and is expected to remain shut for most of the day.
One person, believed to be the driver of one of the trucks, sadly died at the scene, while the other driver was transported to the hospital in a serious condition.

According to Heidelberg Times, the crash happened at nearly the same spot as a serious accident on 4 July, which left several people injured. Local motorists have since raised concerns about the safety of this stretch of road.
It’s also understood that a diesel spill occurred during the incident, which is likely to prolong cleanup efforts and has raised environmental concerns.
Motorists are urged to make use of alternative routes while the scene is being cleared.
