In a scene straight out of an action movie, chaos erupted at Karoi along the Harare – Chirundu highway when a runaway Freightliner truck came thundering down the road and slammed into an abnormal load vehicle carrying a massive dump truck bin.
According to witnesses, the road had been cleared by escort vehicles moments before the crash, with motorists pulling off to make way for the oversized load. The calm didn’t last long. Out of nowhere, the Freightliner appeared — hurtling downhill at frightening speed, passing stationary trucks and cars as bystanders watched in horror.
Sensing something terribly wrong, the abnormal load driver quickly brought his truck to a stop and bailed out. “He just jumped and ran for dear life,” said one witness at the dramatic scene. “The way that truck was coming, you could tell there were no brakes — it was flying!”
Seconds later, the runaway Freightliner narrowly missed the tractor unit and smashed directly into the giant dump truck bin being towed behind.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported. Both drivers managed to escape moments before the collision — the runaway driver reportedly jumped onto the bunk bed to save himself from the wreck.

Videos of the crash scene have since gone viral online, sparking debate about road safety, brake failures, and the dangers faced by truckers navigating steep or poorly maintained routes in the region.
Authorities in Zimbabwe are investigating the incident. For now, the two drivers are counting their blessings — alive to tell the tale after a close brush with death on the open road.
