Strong winds sweeping across Cape Town and surrounding areas have caused major disruption on the N1 and surrounding routes, with the Huguenot Tunnel and Du Toitskloof Pass both closed to traffic.
The Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 has been closed to all vehicles due to very strong crosswinds, while traffic was diverted onto the R101 via Du Toitskloof Pass.
However, the situation on the alternative route has also deteriorated after two trucks were blown over by the strong winds, resulting in the closure of the R101 via Du Toitskloof Pass to all traffic.
Western Cape Mobility Chief Director for Traffic Management, Maxine Bezuidenhout, confirmed the closures and urged motorists to avoid the affected area.
“We confirm that the Huguenot Tunnel is currently closed to all vehicles due to strong winds, while Du Toitskloof Pass is also closed to all traffic following an incident,” Bezuidenhout said.

She said the current alternative route is the R43 via Ceres and Wolseley.
“Heavy motor vehicles are advised to avoid Bainskloof Pass,” Bezuidenhout added.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the affected area where possible, follow instructions from traffic officials on the ground, exercise extreme caution and allow for significant additional travel time.
The closures are causing heavy delays as authorities manage traffic affected by the dangerous weather conditions.
Drivers of trucks and other high-sided vehicles are urged to take particular care, as the strong crosswinds can make conditions hazardous, especially on exposed sections of road and mountain passes.
Motorists are advised to check conditions before travelling and to avoid unnecessary travel through the affected area until the routes are reopened.
