Cape Town – The Western Cape Government is calling on residents to voice their opinions on the proposed motor vehicle licence (MVL) fee increases, which were officially published in the Provincial Gazette Extraordinary 9057 on 17 April 2025.
If you’ve got something to say, you’ve got until Saturday, 17 May 2025 to make your voice heard — before the new fees kick in on 1 August 2025.
With over 2 million registered vehicles cruising the Western Cape roads, the province reckons its top-notch road network is no accident.
The fees collected from licensing are ringfenced — meaning they’re pumped straight back into maintaining, upgrading, and expanding the road system.

“Paying your licence fees isn’t just ticking a legal box — it’s helping keep our roads safe, efficient, and reliable,” said Muneera Allie, Head of Communication at the Western Cape Mobility Department.
“Every cent goes back into building and maintaining the lifelines that connect our communities and boost the economy.”
The money raised from MVL fees mainly goes towards:
- Upgrading and maintaining provincial roads,
- Assisting municipalities with key road maintenance,
- Ensuring safer mobility for everyone — from truckers and tourists to taxis and bakkies.
Given how crucial the road network is for commerce, tourism, and service delivery, the government says the proposed increase is aimed at keeping the Western Cape ahead of the pack.
