Cape Town – In the true spirit of Mandela Day, Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku took to the streets on Thursday, leading by example with a series of community-focused road safety initiatives under the theme “It’s in Your Hands.”

Kicking off the day in Masiphumelele, Minister Sileku joined forces with South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) to distribute visibility belts to pedestrians and cyclists. These belts are vital in preventing accidents on the province’s busy roads, especially for those who rely on walking or cycling as a daily means of transport.

“Visibility saves lives,” said Minister Sileku. “Every belt handed out is a step toward a safer road environment for our most vulnerable road users.”

He then visited the Langa Bicycle Hub, where he handed over safety gear to wheelchair users. The hub has become a symbol of inclusive, sustainable mobility in the area, and the Minister’s visit reinforced the province’s commitment to accessibility.

In Khayelitsha, the Minister continued his Mandela Day outreach by delivering goodie bags to locals at Khaltsha Cycles. The organisation promotes cycling as a means of empowerment and independence, especially among youth.

Minister Sileku wrapped up the day at the Somerset West Weighbridge where he met with truck drivers and handed out gift packs in appreciation of their critical contribution to the economy.

“Mandela Day reminded me that Madiba’s legacy lives on, not just in grand gestures, but in small, consistent acts of service. When we place safety, dignity and care into our own hands, we carry forward the kind of leadership that transforms our province,” Sileku said.

He called on all road users to make road safety a daily commitment, saying, “Whether you are a driver, pedestrian or cyclist, choose care, choose safety – every day.”
