The Western Cape Government is calling on all road users to get serious about safety after a horror week on the province’s roads left 33 people dead, 19 of them pedestrians.
The spike in fatalities was recorded between 22 and 28 April 2025, and it’s got officials and communities shaken — and rightfully so.
Adding fuel to the fire, 96 motorists were caught and arrested for driving under the influence, showing that too many people are still taking chances with lives – theirs and others’.
Muneera Allie from the Western Cape Mobility Department didn’t mince her words: “These aren’t just numbers – they’re families torn apart, futures cut short. We need every single road user to take responsibility, especially as another long weekend looms.”

The department has issued a fresh appeal to both drivers and pedestrians, urging them to be alert, follow the rules, and ditch the booze if you’re behind the wheel.
With the school holidays in full swing and traffic volumes rising, the risk of more fatalities is high.
Traffic law enforcement teams have stepped up operations across the province, working with municipalities and safety partners to clamp down on reckless behaviour.
But as they’ve said — they can’t do it alone.
The provincial government has issued safety guidelines for both drivers and pedestrians:
Drivers are reminded to:
- Slow down in residential and school areas.
- Avoid driving under the influence at all costs.
- Be vigilant at night and during low-visibility conditions.
- Stay off mobile phones while driving.
- Be aware of pedestrians, especially in poorly lit areas.
Pedestrians are urged to:
- Cross only at designated crossings or intersections.
- Wear reflective clothing at night.
- Avoid walking under the influence of alcohol.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions near traffic.
- Teach children road safety basics and supervise them closely.
“Let’s all do our part,” said Allie. “Every life lost is one too many.”
