Bakkie driver killed in head-on crash with a tanker near Verulam

The driver of a white Kia bakkie who was allegedly driving contra-flow was killed in a head-on collision with a tanker truck on Vincent Dickenson Road in Cottonlands near Verulam, KZN this Sunday morning.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) the accident happened around 9h30.

RUSA members arrived on scene to find the lifeless body of the bakkie driver trapped in the wreckage.

It is alleged that a Mercedes Benz truck pulling a fuel tanker was travelling towards Verulam while the bakkie was proceeding in the opposite direction.

Witnesses said the bakkie veered onto the incoming lane and collided head on with the fuel truck.

It is further alleged that a Toyota Quantum taxi collided into the tanker trailer causing the truck and tanker to jack knife.

The tanker was loaded with approximately 21000 litres of fuel at the time of incident.

The truck driver did not sustain any injuries.

As at 13h00 the road was still closed while Emergency Personnel attend to the scene.
