10 Pietermaritzburg family members shot dead in their home

In a dawn attack, a family of 10 in Imbali Unit 14, Pietermaritzburg, were shot dead by a group of armed men on Friday.

The victims, eight women and two men, were fatally shot at around 4am.

The police are still investigating the scene, and forensic specialists are collecting evidence.

According to Ward Councillor Mabhungu Mkhize, the community is in shock and has never witnessed such a mass murder before.

“I went to the scene and when I got there the police had already put out tapes. I could not see because it was dark, but the police told us 10 people were killed. They told us it was eight women and two men. We are yet to understand if there were children who were also killed,” said Mkhize.

There is uncertainty if any children were among the victims.

In a separate incident, four men were killed in KwaMashu B section the yesterday, where the suspects fled in a vehicle belonging to one of the victims.

The motive for both shootings remains unknown, and a manhunt for the suspects has been initiated.
