Eight trucking companies falling under the Barloworld Logistics Group will be affected by the announcement made by group CEO Dominic Sewela of the company’s exit from the logistics sector.

Sewela confirmed on Tuesday that the group will be exiting the logistics business and has also put the automotive business “under business review”.

“The logistics business reported an operating loss of R30 million and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic will only make things worse. The operating environment has been characterised by general economic deterioration across all of our market segments and business units at varying levels,” said Sewela.

An analyst said there is overcapacity in the logistics industry and Barloworld is not going to get someone to buy it while it’s making those sort of losses.

“The worst is still to come. The March financial results only had a few weeks of Covid-19,” said the analyst.

Barloworld follows Imperial Holdings’ closure of its linehaul and bulk freight business – Imperial Cargo. Thousands of jobs will be lost in the process.

The *move by Barloworld logistics might spell retrenchments for more than 2 500 people.

According to Barloworld Logistics website, the company has 1 078 trucks spread across their diversified logistics business catering for a number of clients in the agriculture, mining, waste, construction and FMCG sectors in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique.
