N3 snow fall between Van Reenen and Harrismith causes massive traffic disruptions

Motorists using the N3 between Van Reenen and Harrismith have been warned to be wary of snow, wet weather and reduced visibility in the area.

The N3 Toll Concession warned road users to switch on their headlights and increase the following distance to ensure that they remain safe in such adverse weather conditions.

Road users are warned of reduced visibility and icy conditions on the N3 Toll Route between Van Reenen and Harrismith in the Free State* as a result of snow and wet weather. N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) requests drivers to please reduce their speed and increase following distances. Keep headlights switched on and approach the area with caution. Inclement weather may result in traffic delays and congestion.

Videos sent to SA Trucker show the N3 completely covered in snow. Vehicles can be seen using one lane moving in a single file while the second lane remains unused.

The South African Weather Service predicted that the cold front would bring rain on Thursday night.

Snow was predicted over Lesotho as well as the southern parts of the Drakensberg with most of it expected over the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape as well as over Lesotho.

SA Truckers in the area reported more than 10cm of snow between Montrose and Harrismith.

Towns like Harrismith, Cathedrals Peak, Underberg, Barkley East, Molteno received some light flurries on Friday.
