crime scene saps - One Suspect Killed, Two Injured After Hijacking Truck in Kuils River

A truck hijacker was shot and killed while his two accomplices were injured in a shootout with traffic patrol officers in Kuils River on Wednseday afternoon.

The trio had allegedly hijacked a delivery truck but lucky was not on their side, a community member who saw their evil act contacted the police who acted swiftly to corner the suspects.

Local police spokesperson WO Liesel Beukes said according to information received three men with firearms hijacked a delivery truck of Food Lovers’ Market in Carinus Street, Kuils River, in its parking area on Wednesday 17 January at 11:15.

“The delivery truck crew was forced into the cab of the truck and the driver was told to drive towards the R300 highway,” she explained.

A community member saw what was happening during the truck-jacking and alerted highway traffic patrol, who pursued them.”

Beukes said the delivery truck came to a stop on the R300 before the Hindle Road turnoff (direction Mitchell’s Plain).

“The suspects jumped out and started shooting at the traffic officers, who returned fire.”

Beukes said one of the suspects was fatally wounded in the shootout. The remaining two were wounded and arrested.

Both received medical attention at Tygerberg Hospital and are currently in custody in the holding cells at Kuils River Police Station.

Beukes said the case was being investigated by the provincial Investigating Unit for Serious and Violent Crimes.

The two suspects, aged 29 and 36, will appear in the Blue Downs court on Friday 19 January.
