Trucker nabbed hiding R6m illegal cigarettes in petrol tanker at Beitbridge

Limpopo police have arrested a truck driver and his accomplice after they were caught smuggling illegal cigarettes worth more than R6 million on Monday afternoon.

The two suspects, aged 36 and 44, were arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post.

Limpopo police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo says police were on a routine patrol at the border post when they spotted a suspicious petrol tanker.

Upon searching the petrol tanker police discovered contraband of illegal cigarettes.

“Five hundred and twenty-three master boxes containing thousands of cartoons of illicit cigarettes were found hidden in a specially made compartment in the tanker.”

Both men are expected to appear in Musina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
