Two Kimberley Flying Squad police officers, a man and a woman, have been shot dead at the Transnet Engineering Depot near the Diamond Pavilion Mall in Kimberley following a high-speed chase with a suspected car thief.

It is alleged that the suspect drove into the depot premises where he ended up in a ditch with the suspected stolen vehicle.

It is believed that a chase ensued on foot and the two police officers managed to catch up with the suspect.

According to a report by DFA, the suspect allegedly managed to disarm the female officer of her R5 rifle and shot and killed her and her colleague.

It was then reported that the armed suspect entered the Diamond Pavilion Mall, sparking a massive police response.

The mall was closed off. While some shoppers were told to leave the mall, others stayed inside stores where the doors were locked and people were seen taking cover on the floor.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien said the 38-year-old suspect was arrested and he will appear in court soon.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola said he is saddened and shocked by the fatal shooting which resulted in the death of two SAPS members.

The two members, a Sergeant and a Constable were following up on information about a stolen hired sedan that was allegedly stolen and enroute from Bloemfontein.

The 38-year-old suspect was arrested and will be charged with murder and will appear in court soon.
