Emergency services are at the scene of a chemical spillage, suspected to be hydrochloric acid, on the N3 southbound carriageway.
The incident, which led to the closure of the N3S between the Pavilion and Spaghetti Junction, was triggered when the acid tanks allegedly fell off a truck onto the roadway.
The spillage resulted in a blanket of smoke, forcing traffic to a halt and raising immediate safety concerns.
Initial reports suggested the smoke was coming from the ground after witnesses failed to see the truck which was parked a few metres away from the scene.
ALS paramedics, reporting from the scene, have confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.
However, it remains unclear how long it will take to fully clear the scene and reopen the road to traffic.
Motorists are still advised to avoid the N3 southbound and use alternative routes to prevent getting stuck in the heavy congestion.
Cleanup hasn’t yet started as authorities assess the situation.
