Rimbi tours bus accident zebra kiss

The Zimbabwean bus driver in a viral video where he blocked another bus from overtaking him resulting in the other bus colliding with a truck has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment in Mutoko Magistrates Court in Zimbabwe.

Mika Makwara (49), who was driving the Zebra Kiss bus along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway was convicted of reckless for his actions in the video which went viral on social media.

“The state proved that on the 17th of January 2023 as the accused person drove along the Harare-Nyamapanda road, he blocked the Rimbi Travel and Tours bus from overtaking despite having seen the other driver’s intention to overtake. The accused person occupied the middle and right lane to obstruct the Rimbi Travel and Tours bus from overtaking as they were competing for passengers,” wrote the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe in a statement.

“As a result of the continuous obstruction, the Rimbi Travel and Tours bus was involved in an accident with a Shackman Tipper truck which resulted in the death of one person. The accused person’s conduct was unlawful and reckless.”

“He was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment. He was also banned from driving heavy vehicles as well as public service vehicles for life. He was further banned from driving light vehicles for 12 months.”

The driver for the Rimbi Travel and Tours that collided with the truck, Misheck Penyai, was also convicted of reckless and negligent driving, he will be in court this Tuesday for sentencing.
