Cape Town- A truck was petrol bombed in the early hours of the morning on N1 in the direction of Worcester near the Rawsonville weighbridge.
Kenny Africa, Western Cape traffic chief, says the truck was set on fire after the suspects packed stones across the road and forced the vehicle to a standstill.
“It is alleged that three men approached the truck, pointed a firearm at the driver and ordered him to get out,” says Africa.
“They then threw the truck with a petrol bomb. They fled in a purple Opel Corsa without number plates in the direction of Cape Town.”
The truck had a load of groceries when it was set on fire. The driver was not injured.
Africa said by 05:30 the burning truck was still blocking the road. No vehicle could therefore pass to Worcester.
Traffic in the direction of Cape Town was not affected.
This incident comes after trucks have been targeted anew and damaged or even set on fire over the past few days.
Two trucks were set on fire late Monday night on the N3 in the Mooi River area of KwaZulu-Natal.
Over the weekend a truck was also set alight in the area of Ashburton near Pietermaritzburg and another near Kokstad.
According to media reports, several transport business owners said their businesses were stationary because truck drivers were too scared to drive due to threats of violence.
