R40 protests

Truckers using the R40 between Marite and Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga are urged to avoid the road right now, Tuesday 24th May, due to a violent protest which has seen three trucks being burned.

Angry residents from Marhonwane are said to be the ones that have torched the trucks near the Inyaka Dam.

The protesting community is allegedly demanding that the Mpumalanga government construct a tarred road between Marhonwane and Thushanang Villages near Mature.

Two trucks were burnt for the same reason in the same area last week.

The R40 route is the strategic road that links Mpumalanga and Limpopo via Acornhoek towards Hoedspruit.

All transporters with trucks using that route are urged to hold back their trucks or use alternatives wherever possible.

SA Trucker could not immediately confirm whether the affected truckers were safe.

According a video update by SA Emergency Reports on Twitter, police were yet to arrive at the scene.
