A tragic maritime accident occurred on November 16, 2023, when a double-decker ferry carrying cruise passengers to Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas capsized, resulting in the death of a 75-year-old American tourist.
The ferry, transporting 100 passengers from Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas, began its journey around 9:30 a.m. local time.
Disturbing footage emerged, showing passengers frantically jumping into the water to escape the sinking vessel.
Blue Lagoon Island’s emergency response teams were quick to offer aid, as noted in their Facebook post.
The teams successfully rescued passengers and five staff members, transferring them to the island.
Two passengers required hospitalization for further medical attention.
Among the rescued, a woman in her 70s was retrieved from the water but unfortunately, later pronounced dead.
A passenger, Kelly Schissel, captured the harrowing moment on her cell phone, showing the ferry’s alarming tilt and eventual submersion.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of this tragic incident.
