Braamfontein Fatal Shooting of JMPD Officer by SAPS Member Caught on Camera

Video footage of the fatal shooting of a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer by a member of the SAPS following an altercation at a night club in Braaamfontein has surfaced on social media.

The disturbing altercation occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 26, 2023, and was captured on video by a bystander’s camera, shedding light on the tragic events that transpired.

JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, provided details indicating that the deceased officer was attempting to exit the parking lot when he encountered a vehicle blocking his way. A confrontation quickly ensued between the officer and the driver, escalating rapidly until shots were fired, resulting in the tragic loss of life of the JMPD officer.

Further investigations revealed that the alleged shooter was a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS), although no arrests have been made in relation to the incident thus far, according to Fihla.

Initial reports, supported by online footage, suggest that the altercation began when the deceased officer, who can be seen holding a gun in the footage, approached the vehicle occupied by the SAPS officer and his companion.

It is alleged that the deceased officer initiated the assault on the SAPS officer outside the nightclub, provoking a response from the latter who discharged his firearm in self-defense.

The Hillbrow police have taken charge of the investigation into this distressing incident.

Robbie Raburabu, a representative of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), confirmed the shooting and expressed condolences for the tragic loss of life suffered by the metro police officer.

Raburabu assured the public that IPID is diligently examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, emphasizing that no names can be disclosed at this stage.
