Bus overturns killing five people on N2 near Swellendam

Five people have died and 48 others were injured after the bus they were travelling in overturned on the N2 near Swellendam in the Western Cape on Friday.

The provincial government said traffic officials and SAPS closed all the lanes and were working to manage the traffic.

In a joint statement, Premier Alan Winde, Health and Wellness MEC Nomafrench Mbombo and Mobility MEC Ricardo Mackenzie said the bus overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

In a statement yesterday, the Swellendam municipality said the section between Tredici and Swellengrebel streets on the N2 was blocked to traffic.

“Road users are advised to drive through Voortrekker Street and turn left to get back on the N2,” it added.

It appealed to road users to be extra vigilant this long weekend.

“We wish to extend our condolences to the families of the deceased. We wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Jandré Bakker, spokesperson for the Department of Mobility.

Mackenzie said the crash was a reminder for motorists to prioritise safety on the roads. He said law enforcement was out in full force to ensure motorists’ safety and encouraged drivers to take breaks when tired.

Mbombo said the critically injured patients had been airlifted to Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and George hospitals. She said emergency services also referred some to Worcester Regional Hospital. Some received treatment from the scene, others at the local clinic and some at Swellendam Hospital.Winde conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families.

“I would like to send my most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. For now, we are focused on a coordinated response to give all victims the best possible care and ensure safety at the scene.”
