Christiaan de Wet closed

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has closed off a section of Christiaan de Wet Rd in Roodepoort after the road subsided as a result of a damaged stormwater infrastructure.

The left lane of Christiaan de Wet behind Clearwater Shopping Mall, towards Ontdekkers Road, has been closed off to traffic as from 17th May 2020 until further notice.

Motorists are advised to adhere to the reduced speed limits as this section of Christiaan de Wet Road before Wilgerood Road has very sharp curves.

The Head of Infrastructure Development, Siyabonga Genu said that the road infrastructure will require urgent rehabilitation and an installation of new stormwater drainage system, as Christiaan de Wet Rd is a major arterial road.

“The rehabilitation is estimated to cost approximately R25 million, however this cost will be finalized once designs solutions have been developed.

In the meantime, we have implemented a temporary closure on the left lane (East or West direction) to ensure the safety of our road users. All other lanes on that road remain unaffected and are open to traffic,” Genu added.

The JRA will further communicate developments on Christiaan de Wet and would like to thank road users for their patience during this inconvenience
