The Department of Transport has asked inexperienced truck drivers to register for training as promised in the Road Freight Logistics Task Team Implementation Plan activity 10 which aims to capacitate South African truck drivers.
The DoT promised to enhance local truck drivers’ skills through the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) driver training support program.
DoT acknowledged the need to establish an academy to provide training to the drivers.
The move is part of the government’s plans to address problems faced by South African truck drivers when seeking employment.
In a letter to ATDF-ASA, the DoT said it was in the process of addressing activity 10 in the Implementation Plan and requested unions and employer associations, to provide information on truck drivers who need to be trained for the trucking industry.
“Please note that the information should consist of the drivers’ identity numbers for the purpose of cross-checking with the database from the Department of Employment and Labour and the NaTIS system,” wrote the DoT.
“We will do our part and collect the information they want and leave it to them,” ATDF-ASA Secretary-General, Sfiso Nyathi said welcoming the DoT’s plans.
“It’s not the most crucial part of the Implementation Plan, but we will wait and see how it goes,” said the sceptical Nyathi.
Nyathi asked SA Trucker to help collate the required information.
