A truck driver has been killed after a container he was hauling fell onto his cab while attempting a U-turn on Imola Place in Westmead just after 7:15 a.m. on Thursday morning.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived on the scene to find total carnage after a horse and trailer with a full load attempted to turn, causing the container to overturn and land on the cabin, crushing the driver.
The driver, believed to be in his thirties, was found severely entrapped in the cabin. He had sustained fatal injuries, and there was nothing more paramedics could do for him. He was declared deceased at the scene.
The Netcare 911 Rescue unit, together with the Ethekweni Fire Department, used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to try to free the driver.
At this stage, the events leading up to the accident are unknown; however, SAPS will be investigating further.
However, since pictures suggest that the container came off the trailer before crushing the cab, it indicates that the twist locks used to secure the container may not have been locked.
