Huguenot tunnel closed due to veld fire in Du Toitskloof Pass

The Huguenot tunnel was closed in both directions on Wednesday afternoon as firefighters battled a blaze nearby.

The fire was close to Du Kloof Lodge in Du Toitskloof Pass on the N1, said Jo-Anne Otto, the spokesperson for the Cape Winelands District Municipality.

She said three municipality fire vehicles, two contracted ground teams and three helicopters were deployed, while two more fire vehicles were en route.

“Fire Services have requested that motorists do not stop to take photos, not only is this a hazard to fire vehicles, but also hampers the traffic flow. The N1 is currently open for traffic, however it may be closed if smoke reduces visibility.”

On Wednesday morning, the municipality had warned of very hot temperatures, with a red fire index warning for Cape Winelands and surrounds.

It said the SA Weather Service had predicted temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius for the next 48 hours.
