load of coal

A truck driver was apprehended by police in Hluhluwe on Monday following suspicions of engaging in the illegal sale of his whole load of coal, which he was supposed to deliver in Richards Bay, by diverting it from its intended destination.

The arrest was made as a result of an intelligence-driven investigation, according to Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize.

“The truck driver, a 45-year-old individual, was believed to have driven an empty truck to the Richards Bay port terminal. Law enforcement officers identified the suspicious truck and conducted a thorough search,” Mkhize stated.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the truck was already empty, and the coal cargo had been sold and unloaded by the driver before reaching its designated location.

“It is alleged that the driver intended to reach the port terminal, turn around, and falsify the delivery of coal,” Mkhize added.

The truck driver made an appearance at the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing charges of theft.

“The suspect has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear for a formal bail application on Tuesday, 4 July,” Mkhize confirmed.
