Truck Driver Busted with 500 Kilograms of Dagga at Samancor Ferrometals Truck-Stop

A truck driver was arrested yesterday morning after being caught with a significant haul of 500 kilograms of cannabis concealed within bags.

The incident happened just before 06:00 on Tuesday morning in Middleburg.

It’s alleged that during a routine patrol at the Samancor Ferrometals truck-stop, a dog handler spotted a Mercedes Benz truck entering the premises at approximately 05:43 AM.

Suspicion arose when two individuals were observed lifting the tarps of the side tipper interlink and removing some bags.

Swift action was taken, as the handler promptly informed the shift supervisor, who swiftly arrived on the scene accompanied by two additional dog handlers.

Upon confronting the truck driver, the supervisor and handlers decided to inspect one of the bags.

To their surprise, it was found to be filled with cannabis.

The police was immediately notified, leading to the immediate arrest of the truck driver, identified as a citizen of the Kingdom of eSwatini.

Subsequently, the confiscated cannabis was transported to Samancor Ferrometal’s weigh-bridge.

104 bags of dagga were recovered with names written on each bag.

The dagga weighed 500kg with an estimated street value of one Million Rand.

The truck driver was arrested and charged for dagga trafficking.

He will appear in Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 10 August 2023.
