According to an alert issued by the Johannesburg Joint Operating Committee of Alexandra, Midrand, Sandringham, and Sandton, the explosion occurred around 5:46 pm. The cause appears to be related to the underground gas lines, but further investigations are required to confirm the exact details.

Authorities have urged the public to steer clear of the affected area to allow emergency services to respond to the incident. The Johannesburg Metro Police have dispatched officers to the scene to verify the authenticity of the videos and gather more information.

Multiple reports indicate that streets such as Bree and Loveday Streets were impacted by the explosion, with some vehicles reportedly sinking into the ground. A witness who was present at the scene, described witnessing a massive trench about 10 meters wide and noted a strong smell of gas in the air.
