The N3 is closed to traffic between Pietermaritzburg and Cedara at Hilton following two multiple-vehicle crashes in the same vicinity involving about 90 vehicles according to preliminary reports.
Motorists are urged to avoid the N3 Johannesburg bound which is completely blocked at Hilton. The Durban-bound carriageway is also affected as the area is covered in mist.
Several vehicles have been involved in the crash including cars, taxis and trucks.
Many people have been seriously injured and some are feared dead in the serious crashes.
The area is very misty and the long weekend traffic has also made things worse.
