Human Trafficking Rea Pele Innovations

A Zimbabwean truck driver based in South Africa and two Zambian men have been arrested by Botswana Police Service (BPS) for human trafficking.

The incident happened on August 15, 2023, when the three suspects were apprehended at the Ngwasha Veterinary Gate in Botswana.

The trio was stopped by the BPS during a routine operation and subjected to a search.

“It’s alleged that the two Zambian men, passengers in truck, jumped out of the truck and attempted to flee but they were immediately captured,” said BPS spokesperson Near Bagali.

“This raised eyebrows for the cops who then thoroughly searched the truck,” he added.

“To the shock of law enforcement, the trailer revealed a distressing cargo of 40 males, ranging in age from 10 to 35 years old.”

“Initial findings by the police suggest that these individuals hailed from Ethiopia and were en route to the Republic of South Africa.”

BPS has launched a thorough investigation into a harrowing case of human trafficking.

The three suspects have been identified as Evance Kalulu (35) and Francis Mutale (46) from Lusaka, Zambia, and Artwell Manyeruke (35) from Masvingo, Zimbabwe.

On August 17, 2023, they made their first appearance before the Nata Magistrate Court.

Pending the ongoing investigation, the suspects have been remanded into police custody.

Bagali said, the Botswana Police Service remains committed to unraveling the full extent of this case and ensuring that justice is served for the victims.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are working tirelessly to shed light on the operations of this alleged human trafficking ring and to prevent further instances of such heinous crimes.
