Six people were injured when a side tipper truck failed to stop at a traffic light and crashed into five vehicles on the M7/N2 interchange in Durban on Wednesday morning.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said emergency services were called out to the scene at about 9.20am.

“On arrival, paramedics found total chaos [with one vehicle overturned]. A quick triage was set up and six patients needed medical assistance,” he said.

More ambulances and advanced life support teams were dispatched.

“Four occupants were treated before they were transported to hospital,” Jamieson said.

He added that traffic was severely affected as the Durban-bound carriageway was blocked and there was “a large diesel spill”.

It’s alleged that the truck was coming down from the N2 south intending to join the M7 east when the accident happened.

It suspected that the truck was pushed by the heavy load it was carrying and could not stop before the traffic lights on the M7.

It proceeded to crash into vehicles were already in the intersection and only managed to stop while blocking the M7 eastbound carriageway.

The truck driver was not injured in the crash.

The interchange is notorious with crashes involving trucks as they struggle to contain their speed coming downhill from Bellville side on M7 or Mayville on the N2.

Truck drivers are urged to exercise caution when approaching this interchange as many accidents occur there.
