Watch: Tanker explosion on N1 near William Nicol drive

A tanker explosion occurred on Friday afternoon on the N1 north freeway between Malibongwe and William Nicol drive.

Emer-G– Med says paramedics together with multiple emergency services are on the scene.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says all lanes on the N1 north have been blocked off to traffic due to the tanker explosion.

It’s not known if anyone was hurt.

“Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution and to expect heavy delays on both the N1 North and Southbound. Vehicles on the N1 north are being diverted at Malibongwe drive. Currently there are no fatalities reported,” said Fihla.

Update: A ‘mini tanker’ unhitched from a bakkie and it rolled and exploded and caught fire in the process. The tanker was carrying an unconfirmed substance.

One person was treated for moderate injuries and taken by Emer-G-Med ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care.
