When they arrived at the scene, they found the suspect lying on the ground bleeding from his leg.

KZN police say the car owner told authorities that the suspect jumped into his vehicle after his accomplice distracted him by pretending to be asking for directions.

He pointed a firearm at him and got into the driver’s seat.

The motorist says while his hijacker and kidnapper was driving, he pulled up the hand brake and stopped the vehicle.

He says during a tussle, the 35-year-old suspect shot himself.

He was arrested and faces charges of carjacking, kidnapping and of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Police say they’re checking to see if the man is linked to any other cases in KZN.

The suspect is under police guard in a Durban hospital.
