Body of co-driver recovered bringing death toll to 3 in N1 Winburg truck crash

Authorities have recovered the body of another man in one of the trucks involved in a head-on crash on Sunday morning which brings the death toll to three.

Earlier, SA Trucker reported that both truck drivers were killed in the accident that happened between Verkeerdevlei toll gate and Winburg on the N1 south.

While authorities were extracting the bodies of the drivers, another body of a man who was a co-driver in the refrigerated truck was discovered.

Free State police have since initiated investigations into the crash which claimed three lives.

Police spokesperson in the Free State, Stephen Thakeng, says that two trucks were travelling in opposite directions next to the Kareeboom Bridge, when one of the trucks left its lane and went on to collide head-on with the other truck.

Thakeng said that both truck drivers were certified dead at the scene.

Traffic is being diverted onto the Kareeboom bridge off ramp and back onto the N1 after the crash scene.
