Dashcam shows how trucker lost control and overturned on R71 Makgobaskloof Pass

Dashcam footage of a truck crashing on the R71 at the deadly Makgobaskloof Pass has surfaced online.

SA Trucker used GPS coordinates to establish where the accident happened on the 21st of May as shown on the footage.

Truckers are advised against using the R71 when travelling between Tzaneen and Polokwane as the pass has claimed many truckers’ lives or livelihoods with its numerous curves.

In the video, the road is wet and the dashcam reporting that the truck is doing about 57km/h as it starts increasing speed going downhill.

“Oh sxxxt!,” the driver can be heard saying after realising he is losing control of the truck.

The truck continues to increase speed and can be seen swerving from side to side as if it’s going to jackknife.

By grace, the road ahead of him is clear. The truck picks up speed up to 77km/h causing the driver to fail to negotiate a curve to the right then he crashes.

The moment he crashes, another vehicle is passing on the opposite lane, luckily for the motorist, the truck was on its lane.

It’s not known if the truck driver made it out alive or if he was injured.

Efforts to identify the trucking company were fruitless, however, checking on information of crashes recorded on the date on question and in the same area, SA Trucker managed to find a picture of the crash scene.
