Hijacker arrested after victim spots him at same hitchhiking spot in Harrismith

A suspect wanted in connection with a car hijacking that occurred in March on the N3 in Heidelberg has been apprehended by police in Harrismith.

The suspect was caught on Tuesday after a victim who was previously hijacked by him spotted him trying to hitch a ride in a BMW at the same spot he hitched a ride from him before hijacking him.

According to the victim, he had offered the suspect a lift on March 20 while on his way from Durban to Johannesburg.

Since it was dark, the victim had intended to drop the suspect off on top of a bridge in Heidelberg, but the suspect directed him to stop under a bridge where he was accosted by three other men who hijacked him.

The victim reported the incident to the police, but it wasn’t until this week that he saw the suspect again.

The victim was driving past Harrismith when he saw the suspect trying to negotiate for a ride in a BMW.

Suspecting that the man was up to no good, the victim drove to the police who were conducting their duties further down the freeway.

The police stopped the BMW and questioned the suspect about his intentions.

According to the police, the suspect did not provide satisfactory answers and was subsequently arrested. He has been locked up at Harrismith but will be transferred to Heidelberg where he opened the case.

The suspect could be linked to a number of similar incidents in the area. In a social media post, the victim has called for other victims to come forward and assist with the investigation.
