N3 Toll Route expecting heavy traffic conditions on Sunday, 27 September images 25

With high traffic volumes experienced on the N3 Toll Route at the start of the Heritage Day long weekend (Wednesday and Thursday), all indications are that very heavy traffic should be expected today in a northbound direction, towards Gauteng.

Peak traffic conditions are expected to start as early as 09:00 and will continue for most of the day until early evening.

“To better navigate the additional pressure brought about by slow moving traffic and delays, N3TC recommends roads users plan ahead, stay abreast of prevailing conditions, and if at all possible, avoid travelling at peak times,” suggests commercial manager, Con Roux.

“To accommodate the expected high volumes, no lane restrictions will be in place tomorrow on the northbound carriageway, with at least two lanes open to traffic all the way from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng. All toll plazas will operate at full capacity.”

Law enforcement and emergency service operators, including N3TC’s road incident management services will be deployed along the entire route.

Light showers and fog may be experienced along parts of the N3, especially between Pietermaritzburg and Harrismith.

“It is essential to prepare for possible adverse conditions as they may cause further delays, and require additional defensive driving techniques to be deployed. Remember to keep head lights switched on, decrease speed and increase following distance when roads are wet and visibility is compromised,” warns Roux.

Vital traffic information and emergency assistance can be obtained N3TC’s 24-hour helpline on 0800 63 4357
