A North West police captain was taken into custody on Wednesday for allegedly stealing diesel from a police vehicle in Brits.

Captain Juan Oosthuizen, aged 50, appeared in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to face a charge of theft. The case against him was postponed to February 15 for a formal bail application.

According to a statement by North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, Captain Oosthuizen was caught on February 4, 2023, while allegedly draining diesel from a parked state vehicle.

He was arrested following an investigation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit (ACIU).

The North West provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended the ACIU members for taking action against unethical employees who damaged the reputation of the police force.

Four other police officers were arrested in two separate incidents for theft, defeating the ends of justice, and corruption.

Sergeant Thapelo Rammekwa, 46, was arrested for the alleged theft of a generator. He was reported to the provincial ACIU after he recovered the stolen generator but failed to book it into the exhibit register.

He appeared in the Madikwe Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was released on R500 bail. The case against him has been postponed to March 8.

Sergeants Maria Mosiamisi, Keaobaka Rantoane, and Thapelo Molifi were arrested for demanding R10,000 from a motorist.

They appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to face a charge of corruption. They were granted R2,000 bail each and the case against them was postponed to April 14.
