Taxi fleeing from police collides with truck killing one in Durban

One person has been killed when a minibus taxi fleeing from the police and security collided with a truck on Umbilo Road in Durban on Saturday morning.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services said one person died on the scene and two others were injured in the crash just after 10 am.

Paramedics arrived on the scene to find total carnage.

It is alleged that a mini bus taxi was being chased by SAPS and security officials after committing a crime when it collided with a truck at high speed.

The minibus taxi was reportedly travelling contra-flow when the accident happened.

“A female passenger in the taxi was found to have sustained major injuries, and there was nothing more Paramedics could do for her,” said Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics.

The lady was declared deceased on the scene.

“The driver of the taxi was found severely entrapped in the wreckage with critical injuries. He was stabilized on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics while the Ethekwini Fire Department used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to try and free the man,” Jamieson added.

The driver was rushed through to a nearby Durban hospital for the further treatment that he required.

The truck driver sustained moderate injuries and was stabilized on the scene by ALS Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.
