Truck driver flees scene of serious crash on Van Reenen Pass

Two people have been seriously injured after the truck they were travelling in overturned on the N3 at Van Reenen Pass this Wednesday morning (June 15).

The container freight truck effectively blocked the southbound carriageway for a period of time before recovery resumed.

Two passengers who were in the truck were seriously injured. The driver, however, disappeared from the scene immediately after crashing.

The two injured persons were rushed to hospital in Harrismith.

It could not be immediately verified why the driver fled the scene of the crash.

At the time of publishing, 14h30, both the northbound and southbound lanes had been reopened although southbound traffic was a bit slow due to the backlog.

‘Recovery’ operations are currently taking place and motorists are advised to be cautious on this route.

N3TC and RTI responded to the scene and will investigate the cause of the crash.
