Truckers urged to be vigilant as violence flares up again IMG 20200708 WA0716 scaled

Truck drivers are urged to be more vigilant during the night after reports of incidents of violence against trucks started trickling in again.

Four trucks were set alight in three different arson attacks on Old Vereeniging road in Alrode between 17h45 and 21h00 tonight, 08 July 2020.

Another truck was burning on Weltevreden road, Mitchells Plain in the Western Cape. It was not immediately clear if it was truck driver strike related.

Last night several trucks were set alight around the country including in KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Gauteng and Eastern Cape provinces.

The incidents are suspected to be related to the ongoing truck drivers’ strike against transporters accused of illegally employing foreign national truck drivers.

As has been the case in the past, truck torching by service delivery protesters often coincides with the kind of vigilantism instigated by organisations opposed to non-South African truck drivers.

SA Trucker social media platforms continue to update truckers of truck violence hotspot areas.
