6 trucks burnt ladysmith colenso protests

Six trucks were burnt to the ground between Colenso and Ladysmith last night by protesters who are demanding the removal of Mayor Vincent Madlala.

Protesters blocked major roads and stopped all buses and taxis from operating from Monday afternoon.

Some roads are currently blocked with huge boulders, rocks, branches, and broken steel panels.

Many schools in town are closed today, as school management and staff are worried about the children’s safety.

KZN premier is expected to engage with various stakeholders in Ladysmith, including business, the Security Cluster and protesters.

“The situation cannot be allowed to continue unabated, hence we are coming closer as the government to engage with all affected stakeholders. The current protest is affecting business and the economy of all small towns relying on Ladysmith as an important corridor. Our interest is to ensure that there is stability in the province, and we cannot allow Ladysmith to regress on the work done. Once again, we appeal for calm and to all protesters to engage peacefully,” said Premier Zikalala.
