Tanker driver killed in N12 crash at the Kliprivier bridge

A tanker driver was killed after he lost control of his truck on the N12 and crashed into the Kliprivier bridge in Gillview, Alberton on Saturday afternoon.

It’s alleged that the vehicle was travelling along the N12 East when it went off the roadway, onto an embankment and collided with the Kliprivier Drive overpass bridge.

ER24 and numerous other services arrived on the scene shortly after 15h00 to find a diesel tanker truck on an embankment against the roadside barriers.

One man was found outside the vehicle, while another was trapped inside the truck cab.

“Medics assessed the man and found that the man outside the truck had sustained minor injuries while the entrapped man was in critical condition.

“Rescue personnel had to use specialised equipment to free the man from the cab, an operation lasting some time,” ER24 said.

“Once freed, medics treated the men and provided the critical man with advanced life support.”

“Once treated, the critically injured man was airlifted by a private medical helicopter to a hospital while the other man was transported by ambulance.”

“Unfortunately, after some time in the hospital, the critically injured man succumbed to his injuries,” ER24 reported.

Police said a case of reckless and negligent driving will be opened at Mondeor SAPS for further investigation.
