Fourteen people have been shot and killed in a mass shooting at Lahlamlenze tavern in Soweto just after midnight on Sunday.
10 others were injured at the Nomzamo Tavern, as it is popularly known, in Orlando, with three in critical condition.
Initial reports suggested that 13 people were shot dead but another victim succumbed to their injuries in hospital bringing the death toll to 14.
The shooting comes at a time when the country is still recovering from the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy where 22 teenagers died.
“Yes I can confirm that incident did happen and it happened around 12:30am this morning,” Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela said.
“Primary investigations suggest the people were enjoying themselves in the tavern.
“They just came in and shot at them randomly,” Mawela said.
Mawela said detectives are on the scene.
“The age range is just an estimation from my detectives to say they are between 19 and 35 years.”
