Sithulile Zulu to Remain in Custody as Bail Application is Postponed

Sithulile Siyabonga Zulu, the truck driver who was behind the wheel of the truck involved in M41 crash on March 6, will remain behind bars after his bail application was moved to next week.

Zulu is facing two charges in connection with the multiple vehicle crash which include reckless and negligent driving and failure to comply with the duties of a driver following an accident.

The 22-year-old made his second appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the accident which involved more than 45 vehicles and left 16 people injured.

One of those injured was a pregnant mother who had to be airlifted to hospital.

The truck driver initially fled the scene of the accident but later handed himself over to Durban North SAPS.

The serious accident brought the M41 to a complete standstill on Monday morning with paramedics describing the scene as “absolute mayhem.”

It is alleged the brakes of the truck failed causing the multi-vehicle accident which saw Zulu crash through a fence near the M4 hairpin bend almost a kilometre away from the scene.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said Zulu will be remanded into custody.

“The state is opposed to bail and the matter was remanded to 23 March 2023, for a formal bail application,” she said.
