Three members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been killed after their vehicle was allegedly hit by a truck in Steelpark, Vereeniging.

According to Vaalweekblad, the horrific accident happened around 05h30 at a four-way stop on Boy Louw and Carbon Road.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Shaan Motsapi confirmed that the deceased members were on duty when the incident happened.

“Members were on the way from Sharpeville to Steelpark when the police van they were travelling in was hit by a truck.

“The truck failed to stop at the intersection and hit the vehicle, dragging it for about 500 metres before stopping. All three members died on the scene.”

Motsapi confirmed that a case docket of culpable homicide, negligent and reckless driving was launched for investigation.

Vereeniging Station Commander Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba said she was devastated by the incident.

“Today we are grieving three officers who lost their lives serving and protecting the community.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident. I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the families.”
