Violent protests erupt on N3 at Mooi River, man allegedly shot dead

Law enforcement officials are having running skirmishes with protesters in Mooi River which has led to disruption of traffic on the N3 freeway. One person has also allegedly been shot dead when police confronted the protesters.

SA Trucker first received alerts of the violent protest before 08h00 on Monday morning.

Trucks and cars using the busy national freeway were stoned causing the southbound traffic to standstill before the scene of the protest near Mooi River toll gate.

The N3 Toll Concession issued an alert early on Monday saying there were reports of protests in Bruntville near the Mooi River Toll Plaza.

“The protest is ongoing, one of the protesters was shot dead during skirmishes with the police,” a source told SA Trucker. However, there was no immediate confirmation from the police about the death.

Road users are advised to be cautious when approaching the area because the protesters are moving along the N3 freeway.

There were reports of the community burning tyres on the N3 freeway but the police moved in quickly to disperse them and put out the fire.

SA Trucker advises transporters to check for updates from law enforcement before sending their trucks to the area especially when night falls.
