A collision involving a truck and two police vans on Cape Town’s N2 highway resulted in nine people sustaining injuries on Monday morning.

The accident occurred when the truck’s trailer unexpectedly toppled onto a Nissan police van before subsequently crashing into a second police vehicle, a Toyota bakkie.

Police confirmed the incident but stated that the circumstances surrounding this unusual accident still require investigation.

According to eyewitness accounts shared with SA Trucker, the catastrophe unfolded as a truck, transporting a six-meter freight container rear-mounted on a triaxle trailer, lost control. The trailer flipped onto its right side, tragically landing on top of one of the police vans.

The chaos continued as the truck collided with another police van, effectively pinning it against the central barriers of the highway.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) issued a statement regarding the incident: “We can confirm that nine individuals sustained injuries earlier today due to a motor vehicle accident on the N2 highway between Jan Smuts Drive and Raapenberg Road at approximately 10:45 AM.” SAPS further noted that the injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

The Mowbray police have initiated an investigation, with reckless and negligent driving as the primary focus.
