Man arrested for clocking 245km/hr in a Maserati

Johannesburg – A 38-year-old man driving a Maserati worth millions was arrested after he clocked a breakneck speed of 245km/h on Saturday, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) said in a statement.

Member of the EMPD’s high-speed unit, who were conducting an operation on the R21 southbound by the R562 bridge, said the speedster had two passengers in the car with him, a 17-year-old teenager and a 4-year-old child.

The man cited his rush to get to the airport as the reason for excessive speeding.

The EMPD said he was detained at the Olifantsfontein Police Station and was charged with reckless and negligent driving.

The man was released on R1 000 bail and would appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Monday, police said.
