The N2 is closed to traffic between Pongola and Piet Retief in Mpumalanga after three trucks collided and spilled acid on the road.
According to Mkhondo Fire and Rescue Services, two acid tankers and a side tipper truck were involved in the accident just after 23h00 on Tuesday night.
One of the tankers was transporting hydrochloric acid UN 1789 while the other tanker was transporting sulphuric acid UN1830.
The side tipper truck was transporting coal.

The road is expected to be closed for a long time to allow emergency services to clean up the scene.
The condition of the drivers is not yet known at this stage. The story will be updated when more information becomes available.
